Rules in life - # 7

My Dad's friend once told me: "Never Confess!" He said the rule must be followed at all times.

Wife: "Did you have a beer after the game?"

Howitzer: "Uh, no honey! Could you sew my shirt?"

Hockeytown-???

Let us celebrate the Red Wings being knocked out of the playoffs by the Ducks. There are few things I despise more than the fact that Detroit dubbed themselves "Hockeytown."

Even so, this 911 call is an odd showing of their loyalty. The link will bring you to the story and to a link of an audio file of the 911 call (skip to about 4:40 into the call if you can).

Book Review-???

Wow, we are getting sophisticated! Anyway, just finished off this book from Denver Post writer Adrian Dater. As you can see, it is called "Blood Feud" and is all about the Avalanche and Red Wings rivalry. It is highly recommended for hockey fans.

My copy is missing a few pages (the dogs locked themselves in the bathroom all day) but you are welcome to borrow it!

Tributes to Americans - Brian Rolston

I always loved Brian Rolston's game. I was ecstatic when the AVS got him, and though it didn't work out, loved that he also went from the AVS to the Bruins. Enjoy the blazing speed and wicked shot by clicking on his highlighted name.

This clip is all from his time with the Wild, but it is great. It includes the 2 shootout goals he scored on absolute bomb slapshots. You see them against Luongo and Kiprusoff in the video.

He is also the reason why we have a # 12 on our team - and sort of the reason "The Professor" got that number. Don't get me wrong, I have never seen Shane drink enough beers or hit on enough waitresses to be able to shoot like the picture.......

My Top 10 favorite goals - # 7

I am actually old enough to have watched the 1980 USA Olympic hockey team on television. Being a 12-year-old hockey fan, I watched every game.

As you may remember - or have seen in the movie Miracle - the first game vs. Sweden was an important game. A loss would have really hurt the teams chances of advancing to the medal round and Al Michaels really highlighted the importance of that fact during the live telecast. So, down 2-1 with less than one minute left, Bill Baker was on the ice for pulled goaltender, Jim Craig, and scored the tying goal on a long slapshot.

I was ecstatic to watch USA tie the game. And while there were many great players and stories in 1980, I really appreciated the importance of the goal being noted in "Miracle" - the best hockey movie of all time!

NHL Goal of the year - Datsyuk?

Hard to argue this play as it is a true team goal with the big hit setting up the beautiful finish by Pavel Datsyuk.

Podein's record

As a welcome back and Happy Birthday to the Chub, I had to post this story (entries on May 16th) that I knew he would appreciate. The background - about an NHL player who actually bought Chub a beer for wearing his sweater - is in the tale below.......
Dirtiest Moment: The 2001 Stanley Cup was won by the Colorado Avalanche. Avs' forward, Shjon Podein wore his sweaty uniform, equipment and skates for more than 25 hours after his team won the final game. "It was a triple-dog dare. I had to do it," said Shjon, who even slept with his equipment on. "I don't think my wife really enjoyed it because I smelled so bad. I slept on one side of the bed with my dog in the middle and my wife as far away as possible. My dog didn't mind the smell, but my wife thought it was disgusting. I just saw it as a challenge, something fun to do because we'd just won the Stanley Cup. It was 20 percent funny and 80 percent dumb."

Rules in life - # 6

Keeping the theme alive........The Yankees, and their fans, suck!

Editorial # 11 - The end for Foppa?

Rumor has it that Peter Forsberg will be retiring from the NHL. What a sad moment that will be.

I guess that just makes me think how lucky we were to get to see such an amazing player.

I remember arguing with the Chicago meatheads back in 1997 (?) and telling Glen that I thought Forsberg was the best player in the world. I sounded like an AVS homer, but it was hard not to notice how the game changed when he had the puck.

I think he is a Hall of Famer but there will always be debate based on his lack of statistics. It is too bad that he was so un-stereotypically European and played such a physical game, as it undoubtedly shortened his career.

Regardless, what a pleasure to watch the guy play!

Top 10 NHL goals of 96-97

Some beauities from the 96-97 season. Included at # 10 and # 1 are AVS players Keith Jones and Valeri Kamensky.

Also on this list are two former AVS: the Irish-born Owen Nolan and, shockingly, pylon Jeff Shantz (unless I am seeing things).

I actually vote for Ron Francis.

The link is in the title!

Candids of the players......# 5

# 12 - Left Wing - Shane Mcardle goes in and scores on a penalty shot - his aim was true.
He then reflects on the goal and considers penning a song about it.

Editorial # 10 - I don't think Drury has anything left!

Thank god the AVS traded this guy. I don't know if he has any more big games left in him.

I am sure you are tired of me complaining about this trade, so someone else does it via the link in the title.
