Out of Toronto - this article about being a "beer league" hockey ref.  Not much you did not know, but a semi-interesting read about the abuse they take.

The Top 25 Hockey Movies of All-Time - # 21, 20, and 19

Ok, so this is sort of a cheater, but we need to move the list along.  I will likely never see these three Canadian movies.....so we are going to cover between 3 movies in one post.  Quit yer bitchin' - more is usually better. 

The three are:  # 21 The Sweater a story about a boy whose parents buy him a Leafs jersey when he is a Canadiens fan.  It is animated, so take your chances - of course mocking Leafs fans and showing Habs fans as snobs seems brilliant in its simplicity.

# 20 Les Boys - a series about a Men's hockey team that is a comedic look at sterotypes about guys, sports teams and hockey.  Notice the description at the bottom.

And finally # 19 "Canadian Bacon."  It looks terrible, but the clip below (in the next post) looks amusing.

Sure the flight over the keeper (pictured) was awesome.  The pass from Rafalski was also brilliant.  But I thought the best part of this goal (IMO) was Miller taking the pass out of the air - and then scoring this beautiful goal.

In case you missed it, the USA beat Canada for the Gold Medal in the World Junior Championships Tuesday night in Saskatoon (yes, really). 

The USA gave up two late goals to Cananda that sent the game into OT tied at 5-5.

John Carlson scored this game winner in overtime!  The team included DU D-man Matt Donovan and incoming DU recruit Jason Zucker. 

Congrats to the boys!

Dear Steamer -
You are loaded with hockey braniacs, and you know that helmets were mandated into the NHL for players starting in 1979.  Do you think the league should, and ever will, go to mandatory visors?

Thanks for the high praise.  We remember Craig MacTavish being the last player to play without a helmet - and after a while it seemed weird.  We get the "toughness" angle in the NHL, but if players want to, they can take off their helmet to shed the visor (see: Iginla, Jerome).  It can also be argued that Bryan Berard's injury still may have occurred with a shield.  But really, visors should be mandatory in the NHL - there is too much at stake.

The Winter Classic

A fantastic couple of weeks of hockey included the NHL's new showcase, The Winter Classic.  A great game as the Bruins won 2-1 in OT.  It also looked like a great event - and BU and BC are going to play at Fenway Park tomorrow / tonight. 

They also held a Bruins alumni / legends skate.  Regardless of where your hockey loyalties lie, you have to admit that four of the biggest bad asses in hockey history can be seen in this picture from the skate: # 8 Cam Neely, # 4 Bobby Orr, # 24 Terry O'Reilly, and # 77 Ray Bourque.  Well I love that dirty water.......

Goal of NHL 09/10? - # 5

Atlanta Thrasher Maxim Afinogenov scored this great goal against his former team.  Read the lips of teammate Ron Hainsey (wearing an "A") while they celebrate. 

Leafs Update...

Again, the Leafs are looking better with 39 points through 44 games.  The better news, however, is that with all of the 3-point games in the NHL nowdays, they are still third from last place in the standings.  Let's send good karma to Carolina (29 points) and Edmonton (37 points)!
